Effect of a Genre-Based Approach to Improve Students’ Writing Skill of SMKS Start Up Dara Jingga in Academic Year 2024-2025

Abstract

The study was intended to find out the empirical evidence of the effect of using genre-based approach on students’ writing skill. The study used quantitative method with pre-experimental design. The study used purposive sampling with the research sample totally 25 students which classified into one class, experimental class. The population of this study was the ten-grade students of SMKS Star Up Dara Jingga Dharmasraya using the Pre-Experiment method and one Group Pre-test & post-test design. The results of the analysis show that the average student pre-test score was 43.20, while the average post-test score increased to 75.40 after implementing genre-based approach. Hypothesis testing using the Wilcoxon test showed a 2-tailed significance of 0.00, indicating a substantial difference in scores before and after treatment with genre-based approach. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of genre-based approach in teaching speaking has high results, meaning that genre-based approach can improve students' writing skills and have a positive effect on students' writing skills.
