Abstract

Swimming is a competitive sport that relies heavily on an athlete’s ability to maintain speed throughout a race. In addition to the final time, split time analysis serves as a key indicator for evaluating speed distribution, the effectiveness of pacing strategies, and the ability to sustain performance during a race. This study aims to analyze the split-time characteristics of Indonesian aquatic athletes in the 100-meter swim event, identify speed trends in each race segment, and evaluate the athletes’ speed consistency. The study employs a quantitative approach using descriptive methods. Data were collected via an electronic timing system (Omega Timing System) during several 100-meter race sessions. The variables analyzed included the time for the first 50 meters, the time for the second 50 meters, the total time, and the time difference between the two segments. Descriptive analysis was conducted to illustrate the distribution patterns of the athletes’ speeds. The results showed that all athletes exhibited a “positive split” pattern, meaning they completed the first 50 meters faster than the second 50 meters. The athlete in Lane 6 recorded the best time of 54.95 seconds, while Lane 4 demonstrated the greatest consistency with a time difference of only 0.31 seconds. Conversely, some athletes experienced a significant drop in performance, with a gap of more than six seconds in the second half of the race. These findings indicate that the ability to maintain speed is a more decisive factor in performance than initial speed alone. Therefore, training programs should be directed more toward improving speed endurance, lactate tolerance, and pacing strategies so that athletes can maintain their performance until the finish line.
